A Cup Of Ambition

Meaning is not a soft extra. It is one of the more reliable ways to build a workplace where people do not have to be managed into caring.

Adam Grant’s research at a call center makes the case cleanly. Workers raising money for college scholarships saw productivity jump 40 percent when they regularly met alumni who explained how those scholarships had changed their lives. The job stayed the same. The connection to purpose did not.

Roughly a third of people already feel that kind of meaning in their work. The rest need help finding it. The practical move is simple and still underused: ask why someone took the role and what part of the work feels useful to them. Then make that connection visible more often than once a year.

When people understand the point of the work, they need less oversight and give more of themselves. It shows up as fewer escalations, faster problem-solving, and teams that keep going when things get hard.

What would change if the connection between someone’s work and its purpose was visible more than once a year?
